Introducing UT and PA-TFM to an Applied Physics Class

I always enjoy spending time with future technicians and introducing them to the opportunities available in the world of NDT.

During my recent visit to Cégep de La Pocatière, I had the opportunity to introduce students to Ultrasonic Testing (UT), Phased Array (PA) and Total Focusing Method (TFM), highlighting how these technologies provide reliable solutions in critical applications, including integrity inspections aboard the International Space Station (ISS).

A special thank you to Paul Holloway for sharing his photoelastic PA videos, which provided a valuable visual demonstration of ultrasonic waves in action.

The students also took part in a practical laboratory exercise, measuring shear and longitudinal wave velocities in unknown materials. The Wave table team tested two materials, while the MS700 team tested one, giving everyone an opportunity to put their knowledge into practice.

Thank you to all the students for their enthusiasm, participation and great engagement throughout the session. It was a pleasure to share my experience and demonstrate the capabilities of modern NDT technology.

I look forward to visiting again soon.
